Basketball has entered a new era. For decades, coaches judged improvement through experience, intuition, and the eye test. Those skills are still essential, but today's most successful programs are adding another powerful tool to their coaching toolbox: analytics that measure player development long before game night. That was the focus of my recent Championship Vision Podcast conversation with James Oxford, creator of Ahead of the Game Analytics. His mission isn't to replace coaching instincts with spreadsheets. Instead, it's to help coaches uncover the hidden advantages already sitting inside their daily practices. Moneyball Was Never About StatisticsWhen most coaches hear the word Moneyball, they think about baseball and Billy Beane's Oakland Athletics. But Moneyball was never really about statistics. It was about discovering value that everyone else overlooked. The same principle applies to basketball. Most programs measure points, rebounds, assists, and shooting percentage after the game. Elite programs ask a different question: "What can we measure today that helps us win tomorrow?" That shift in thinking changes everything. The Hidden Advantage Lives in PracticeJames shared a simple philosophy that stood out during our conversation: "I don't want coaches to change what they're doing. I want them to get more from what they're already doing." That is the essence of Basketball Moneyball. Every shooting drill... ...contains valuable information if coaches are willing to capture it. Instead of simply watching players shoot, James tracks:
Rather than relying on memory, coaches now have evidence. The Shooting LicenseOne of my favorite ideas from James was something his program calls the Shooting License. Players don't automatically earn the freedom to shoot in games. They earn it by consistently performing in practice. When players complete the required shooting benchmarks, they've earned their "license." Think about the message that sends. Instead of hearing: "Coach just likes him better." Players understand: "I earned the opportunity through my work." Analytics become a tool for accountabilityβnot punishment. Measure the ProcessMost coaches celebrate results. Championship programs celebrate habits. Imagine tracking every player's improvement throughout the season instead of simply looking at game statistics. One player may average 12 points per game. Another averages only 8. But what if the second player has improved his shooting by 18%, reduced turnovers by half, and doubled his finishing efficiency? Which player is actually developing faster? The answer may surprise you. The Eye Test Still MattersOne thing I appreciated about James' philosophy is that analytics never replace coaching experience. They support it. Great coaching still requires:
