The Top 10 Standards to Building a Championship Basketball Program

The Championship Blueprint: 10 Lessons I Learned From Interviewing 8 Master Coaches

By Coach Kevin Furtado

Championship Vision Basketball

What separates championship programs from everyone else?

That question has fascinated me throughout my coaching career.

And instead of trying to answer it by myself, I went directly to the coaches who have done it.

Through my Championship Vision Basketball Podcast, I had the opportunity to interview and learn from eight master coaches who have built elite teams, championship cultures, and sustainable programs.

Those conversations became the foundation for my ebook, The Championship Blueprint: Eight Master Coaches on Building Elite Teams and Cultures.

The eight coaches featured in the Blueprint are:

  • Doc Scheppler — Building Skill-Hungry, Joyful Practices
  • Kurt Guelsdorf — Passion as the Fuel for Sustainable Excellence
  • Allen Whitehart — The Five C's of Championship Culture
  • Kevin Kiernan — Winning the Day and Sustaining a Dynasty
  • Gene Durden — The Grind Formula: Relentless Development and Discipline
  • Mark Cascio — Teaching with Clarity and Simplicity
  • David Lepisto — Connection Before Commitment
  • Craig Campbell — The Standard: Demanding and Sustaining Excellence

These weren't hypothetical ideas pulled from a coaching textbook.

They came from real conversations with successful coaches about what they actually do—how they practice, teach, lead, develop players, establish standards, build relationships and sustain winning cultures.

As I studied those interviews, something became clear.

The coaches didn't all run the same offense.

They didn't use the same defense.

They didn't have the same personality.

But underneath their different approaches were common principles.

Those principles became The Championship Blueprint.

The 10 Lessons

1. Culture Wins
Talent helps you win games. Culture helps you build a program.

2. Become a Learn-It-All
The best coaches never stop asking questions, studying and evolving. The book emphasizes curiosity and humility as foundations of championship coaching.

3. Win the Day
Don't obsess over the championship. Build championship habits today.

4. Make Players Hungry to Improve
Doc Scheppler showed me that great player development can be demanding, competitive and joyful.

5. Keep It Simple
Mark Cascio reinforced that coaching isn't about showing players how much the coach knows. It's about teaching clearly enough that players can execute confidently.

6. Connection Comes Before Commitment
David Lepisto's philosophy reminds us that relationships create the foundation for trust, accountability and buy-in.

7. Practice Your Standards
Don't expect championship execution on game night if you haven't demanded championship habits in practice.

8. Demand Excellence While Showing You Care
High standards and genuine relationships don't compete with each other. The best programs have both.

9. Create Player-Led Accountability
The strongest cultures eventually become bigger than the coach. Players begin protecting the standards themselves.

10. Build Something That Outlasts You
Wins matter. Championships matter. But the ultimate legacy of coaching is the players, people and program you leave behind.

This Is What Makes The Championship Blueprint Different

I didn't want this book to be Kevin Furtado telling coaches how to coach.

I wanted to become the investigator.

I wanted to ask great coaches great questions, listen carefully to their answers, study the common threads and then organize what I learned into something coaches could actually use.

Eight master coaches.
Eight different journeys.
Eight different perspectives.
One Championship Blueprint.

That's the real story behind this ebook.

It represents lessons gathered through my Championship Vision Basketball Podcast interviews, combined with what I've learned throughout my own coaching journey.

And the biggest conclusion I reached was simple:

Championships aren't built on game night. They're built every day.
